ABOUT HONORABLE IBRAHIM TAWA CONTEH
Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh is a member of Parliament representing the people of Constituency 132 in the Western Area Urban District.
Hon Tawa is known for his stance on accountability issues. He recently alarmed accountability challenges faced in the Sierra Leone Parliament and even resigned as the Chairman of the Accountability Committee. He has been a fierce fighter against corruption in the legislative arm of government. Notably, he strongly opposed the issue of poor accountability for funds allocated to Parliament and the proposal for the non-accountable travel imprest for the President, proposed by the Finance Minister in the Finance Act, 2020 and its extension to the Vice President and Speaker suggested by MPs. Many Sierra Leoneans commend his unique ability to put country over party consideration while discharging his duties as an MP. His vocal opposition to corruption in Parliament has come at a very high price. Reports suggest that Honorable Tawa has not had an opportunity to speak within the Wells of Parliament since his public outbursts.
He is also widely credited for spearheading several infrastructural development projects within his constituency. He has built schools, bridges and renovated community markets.
The citation for his award by Chozen Generation Sierra Leone as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Sierra Leoneans in 2020 reads: “FOR STANDING UP FOR THE MASSES IN PARLIAMENT AND RAISING A VOICE ON CRITICAL STATE ISSUES AND FOR CREATING A MODEL OF A PARLIAMENTARIAN WHO IS ACCOUNTABLE TO HIS CONSTITUENTS FIRST, BEFORE PERSONAL AND PARTY INTERESTS.”
